Newsletter – March 2014

In the July edition of the AVFCW newsletter we get some insight into how the organization was started and how Eileen and John Heasley first came up with the idea for an educational non-profit. After returning from Nepal, the Heasleys researched water purification methods and emailed a MIT professor who happened to be in Nepal. Her students installed two plastic biosand filters that Eileen and John donated for an orphanage in Nepal. In the first edition of the AVFCW newsletter for 2014 we get reacquainted with board member Erica Gwynn, and are introduced to Tom Hunt, founder of the Maisi water project in Cuba. The process of installing the first bio-sand filter in Maisi proved difficult. Getting the mold to the village took 17 hours on washboard-like roads. With great anticipation they poured the first filter. But they could not extract the filter from the mold and had to break the filter. The second and third attempts were also unsuccessful. Enjoy the latest version of the AVFCW newsletter, featuring details of the recent trip to Lebanon by AVFCW team members and their work at the schools there. This past April, A Vision for Clean Water co-founder Eileen Heasley and Board Member Dr. Jeannette Saquet traveled to Lebanon to help improve water quality in the country’s approximately 1200 public schools. Eileen and Jeannette assessed the Lebanese Rotarians’ pilot school water project, provided feedback for improvements and offered suggestions for strategies to assure sustainability. They also will be writing grant proposals to raise the estimated $2,000,000 necessary to bring clean water and hygiene/sanitation education to all Lebanese public schools. Download Here (PDF)...

Enjoy the latest edition of the AVFCW newsletter, where we highlight former AVFCW student Kimberly Fogg's challenges while working in Tanzania. The Tanzanian government imposed a 55% tax on the filters. When GSP representatives refused to pay the fee, filters were held in Kenya for almost 90 days, resulting in $650 in warehouse fees; also, the teachers went on strike because they had not been paid for 6 months and the schools were closed for one month. Enjoy the latest edition of the AVFCW newsletter, where we highlight former AVFCW student Matt Gammons's work assessing options in rural Ecuador. Matt Gammons attended the Sanitation Workshop in February 2012. As a part of Engineers Without Borders, he traveled in May, 2012 to El Balsamar, El Salvador to determine if installing composting latrines would be feasible. They set a goal to return in December and build 15 latrines starting with families with young children.
